What are protected species?

Protected species reports vary between species and are site specific. R & D Ecology are experienced in undertaken various protected species surveys and reporting, and will ensure an appropriate set of surveying and reporting will be tailored for your projects specific needs.
In Scotland, the species which are generally classed as Protected Species include (but not limited to):
    • Otter
    • Beaver
    • Badger
    • Water Vole
    • Pine Marten
    • Wildcat
    • Bats
    • Breeding Birds
    • Schedule I Bird Species (Capercaillie, Crossbills, Golden Eagle, White-tailed Eagle, Peregrine, Osprey, Whooper Swan etc.) 
    • Great Crested Newts
    • Natterjack Toads
    • Dolphins, Whales and Porpoises 
    • Seals

Ecology surveys for protected species are completed in order to satisfy planning applications and detail the characteristics of the proposed site of development in relation to any protected and notable species, including European and local/uk priority species.

When can protected species surveys be undertaken?

Timing of surveys are highly dependant on the species, and/or type of development.
